Star pupil follows her dream

Australind Senior High School student Kayla Thompson has received a Fogarty Futures Scholarship worth $1000 to attend four WACE revision courses at the University of Western Australia next month.

Miss Thompson, who is in Year 12, hopes the revision courses, run by the academic taskforce, will help her achieve the ATAR score she needs to pursue a career in medicine.

‘‘I’m hoping to study biomedicine as my undergraduate degree and then go onto a doctor of medicine when I’m done,’’ she said.

‘‘I’m hoping to get the push that I need, because the classes are structured and there’ll be a bit more revision, it will make sure I’m on the right pathway for my exams.’’

‘‘I wouldn’t have been inclined to go and participate in extra study classes without the scholarship.’’

Miss Thompson received the scholarship in recognition of her academic performance and her volunteer work at St John of God Hospital and as a companion for elderly people.

Australind Senior High School principal Greg Slavin said Miss Thompson was hard working and deserved the scholarship.

‘‘Kayla is a talented and bright student and we are excited about her future,’’ Mr Slavin said.

Fogarty Futures Scholarships, awarded by the Fogarty Scholars’ Association, help rural and disadvantaged students improve their educational opportunities.
