Still calling Australia home

The nationally recognised angelic voices of the Australian Girls Choir will be heard in Bunbury next week.

Made famous promoting Qantas with their spine-tingling rendition of I Still Call Australia Home, the choir will visit the city as part of a national tour.

Established in 1984, the choir is made up of 55 girls from across Australia aged from 11 to 17 years.

Over the years, the group has performed at high-profile events including singing for Nelson Mandela at World Reconciliation Day Celebrations and the State Reception for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Surprisingly, assistant tour director and former choir member Erin Kinlyside said the girls had not rehearsed together before going on tour.

‘‘It’s the first time they’ve actually had te chance to perform together,’’ she said.

‘‘The girls that are touring at the moment have only spent a few days together so far.’’

The choir will perform well-known favourites, including I Am Australian and My Island Home.

Any girl with a love of the performing arts can take part in the choir’s junior classes and the group has used their tour to establish a Perth chapter.

The Australian Girls Choir will perform at the Dolphin Discovery Centre, 11.30am on Wednesday, 11am on Thursday at Big Swamp Wildlife Park and at 7pm Thursday at St Boniface Anglican Cathedral.
