Students end term on medieval note

Bunbury Senior High School ended the school term with some medieval activities last week.

Stocks, jousting sticks, medieval games and recipes all featured on the day, which was designed to complement Year 8 humanities students' studies.

Teacher Lizelle Bezuidenhout said the day helped students realise how different life was in medieval times, including how style, fashion and food had changed.

"Part of our history course is the Middle Ages and then part of that incorporates medieval Europe," she said.

"It helps students to experience a medieval vibe through active learning.

"It also helps students see theory in practise and they have been preparing for it all term, making shields and uniforms.

"It's a good way of getting everyone engaged."

About 100 students took part in the day's activities and Miss Bezuidenhout said she hoped to expand it next year by incorporating people from the Balingup Medieval Carnivale.

School chaplain Deon Throne was also involved as a helper and said it was a fun way for students to end a longer than normal 11-week term.

"The students had a lot of fun doing activities like jousting with polystyrene swords and apple bobbing," he said.

"It was a bit of a celebration for the classes involved for getting through a long term."
