Students step right up for a funny lesson

South Western Times

It was a circus scene at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries last Thursday, with students bringing out their inner clowns and acrobats to coincide with a touring exhibition.

The lawn outside the galleries was a stage for 60 students to spin plates, juggle, perform acrobatics and design their own human pyramids.

The workshops coincided with circus-themed artwork in Step Right Up.

Galleries audience development officer Kelly Jennings said it was a joy to be able to offer students a combination of visual and performing arts.

The touring exhibition draws together artwork from leading Australian artists, coupled together with historic works from public and private collections.

‘‘The exhibition aims to offer intellectual access for a broad range of audiences from children to adults, from circus lovers to art lovers,’’ Step Right Up curator Rita Lazauskas said.

Workshop instructor Fatt Matt said the children had a great time enjoying a sneak peek into the industry he loved.

‘‘The beauty of the circus is that everyone can excel at something,’’ Mr Matt said.

And the zany instructor said travelling around the world was one of many highlight of being involved in the industry.

‘‘It brings a lot of smiles to a lot of faces,’’ he said.

Step Right Up is open until January 23.
