Bunbury Senior High School has proved they have one of the best school hockey sides in the State, winning the Buchanan Cup last month.

After winning the A-Grade Country Week title earlier this year, the Bunbury side was invited to compete in the tournament against the best school sides in the State for the famous cup.

The Buchanan Cup, which began in 1995, was named after Busselton Olympic Gold Medallist and former Australian captain Sharon Buchanan.

Buchanan was selected in four successive Olympic teams from 1980.

The Bunbury Senior High School side defeated Como Secondary College, who have won the cup on numerous occasions, 2-1 before downing Narrogin Senior High School in their group stage at Perth Hockey Stadium.

This gave the Bunbury side an opportunity in the final, which they did not waste, defeating Shenton Park College 2-0 to take the championship for the first time.

Coach Louise Morgan said her side had played well for the entire tournament.

"They worked really hard to get the ball forward and when opportunities came they scored the goals," she said.
