Swans give SWFL colts a lesson

Swan District’s colts side handed a lesson in football to a young South West Football League colts team, defeating them by 48 points at Hands Oval today.

The Swans dominated after quarter time, kicking eight goals to one after the first break to win comfortably, 11.8 (74) to 3.8 (26).

Bunbury Football Club product Aidan Clarke led the Swans side on his return home, but it was former Bunbury junior Tobe Watson who starred, kicking five goals in wet conditions to lead the visitors to victory.

The home side was competitive throughout the contest, but the Swans handled the wet conditions better and were more effective with their disposal across the four quarters.

On too many occasions the SWFL chose to handball instead of kick and they put their teammates under enormous pressure, while Swan Districts were content to look for distance in their disposal and give their forwards first option.

The Swans came out of the blocks early, with big half-forward Bradley Fullgrabe kicking the opener, before Watson chipped in with his first.

But once the SWFL settled they began to look composed and quick goals to ruckman Rhys Crawford and young Jack Davidson had the home side back in the contest.

As the rain began to fall heavily the Swans increased their lead and it was Watson who stood tall, kicking three goals in the second term to give the Swans a 31-point buffer at the main break.

The SWFL failed to come out after half-time and add any scoreboard pressure, as the Swans midfield of Josh Cipro, Lochie Huntley and Joseph Hinder got to work.

Eaton Boomers youngster Nathan McCosker was great all game across half-back for the SWFL, while Colin Jetta chipped in around the midfield and Crawford put in a four-quarter performance in the ruck.

But it was not enough and the SWFL failed to kick a goal until late in the third term through the electric Ryan Bennell.

The final quarter was a tussle in the midfield, with neither side able to dominate on the scoreboard as the Swans kicked the only goal of the quarter.
