Taking art to the streets

South Western Times

This September the Papergirl South West project will take art out of galleries and onto the streets of Bunbury.

The artist-run project is still open to submissions and people — regardless of age, skill level, profession or gender — are encouraged to contribute a drawing, piece of writing or picture.

The works will be exhibited at the Front Room Gallery at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries, before they are rolled up and distributed to unsuspecting pedestrians by those on a bike ride through the city centre.

Participant Amanda Doust has contributed a pile of drawings to Papergirl and has used the project as a reason to put pen to paper.

‘‘I like the Papergirl process and I think the process is the art,’’ she said.

‘‘I wanted to take part in a different version of artin Bunbury that wasn’t a picture on a wall and I like that the physical art was not the only goal.

‘‘It will be exhibited roughly, then it is given away for free — the whole project is the art.’’

The Papergirl project has its roots in Berlin and was born in response to the city’s laws which madeitillegalto post artin public places and forced artists to find alternative ways of sharing their work.

Artist Nicole Mickle said this year was the first time the project had run in Bunbury and there had been a great response from the South West’s creative community.

Those who are interested in taking part, including writers, poets, and lyricists, can either drop off their contributions at the Front Room Gallery, email digital work to frontroom@brag.org.au or post it to the Galleries by August 31.
