Taylor in charge of Jets’ front end

ECU Souwest Jets coach Erin Culnane was buzzing with excitement after her side’s 56-54 upset victory over the Western Roar at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Sunday.

But aside from the team showing they can compete with the competition’s elite, Culnane singled out the outstanding efforts of Australind teenager Giselle Taylor.

Working in tandem with Sloan Burton, Taylor came off the bench at three-quarter-time into her preferred position at goal shooter and shot a near-flawless 11 from 12 in the final quarter, which ultimately helped her side get the victory.

“I wanted to bring her into the game earlier,” Culnane said.

“But I thought the front end was working really well. However, in the third quarter, we dropped away but they made some changes to their line-up which also made a difference as well.

“I then felt the front end had got a bit stale and we needed to inject something. And Giselle just brought everything.

“I called her our clutch player on Sunday because she came off and was almost flawless. She even was able to change up her game when they inserted a taller defender on her.

“She began to move and get front position, so I was really happy with her and I told her that.”

The Jets head to the State Netball Centre tomorrow night for an 8.15pm clash against the East Fremantle Sharks, who recorded a comfortable 61-42 victory over the Jets when they travelled to the Eaton Recreation Centre in round four.

“We talked about accountability on Sunday,” she said.

“It’s OK to know that you are able to play well but you can’t say it if you don’t do it. It’s about taking responsibility for your own role with the ball and how you help each other.”
