The grand parade of wearable art

South Western Times

An eclectic fashion parade will open the annual Act, Belong Commit Fire, Fibre and Fine Art Exhibition at the Stirling Street Arts Centre this weekend.

Picture by David Bailey: Bunbury Felters Group member and Art to Wear designer Jacqui Gibson will have her ‘‘art hat’’ on display this weekend.

The event, which is open to the public, is part of the Mental Health activities at the Arts Centre.

A number of the art groups which work out of the centre, including the pottery, mosaic and painting groups, will have their work on display and for sale.

There will also be a ‘‘Culture Sculpture’’ display with outdoor sculptures on show and a three-piece jazz ensemble will provide entertainment.

Bunbury Felters Group member and Art to Wear designer Jacqui Gibson said the fashion parade would showcase a variety of wearable art.

‘‘There is a lot of felt, which is to be expected, but there is also knits and some unusual pieces with pottery sewn into it,’’ Mrs Gibson said.

Julie Christian from the Arts Centre said there would be an array of different art forms and encouraged people to attend the exhibition and check out the local talent.

‘‘An extra special treat will be the age-old art of tapestry and loom weaving and items from the hand-spun spinning wheel,’’ she said.

‘‘There are also embroidery pieces which have been recently exhibited in the Perth Royal Show where they won first prize.’’

The Act, Belong Commit Fire, Fibre and Fine Art exhibition will be on from tomorrow until Sunday with the official opening at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
