At this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala, comedian Tommy Little began his set by telling audiences he always carried a strawberry chap stick with him.

While I won’t ruin the punchline, Little has promised he won’t be without it when he comes to Bunbury as part of the Festival’s 2016 Roadshow tour.

“I have it on my person at all times,” Little said.

“I shot this video over in America and I discovered that everyone has a chap stick. It’s hip.”

Nearing its 20th year, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow travels to more than 80 regional destinations around Australia for three months of comedy madness.

This year will see five acts feature in Bunbury’s line-up including Dilruk Jayasinha, Nath Valvo, Xavier Michelides, Sharul Channa, and of course Little, who is very happy to be along for the Bunbury leg of the tour.

“I’ve never been to Bunbury before, but I’m looking forward to it,” Little said.

Above all he is excited to see WA’s beautiful beaches, even if he is a little wary of the creatures that live off them.

“I’m from Melbourne so everything is beach weather to me,” he laughed.

“I just hope there are no sharks. I’m terrified of anything like that, even big fish.

“On second thoughts, maybe I’ll just bring my wetsuit and tell people I went surfing...”

The 31-year-old’s trademark cheek and modest presence set him apart from the rest of the crowd, having performed at festivals and clubs around Australia since 2007.

Labelled energetic, engaging, and authentically Australian, Little says his breed of comedy is born out of failure.

“My material really just comes from failing at life and then recounting those stories,” Little said.

“That’s how I got into comedy in the first place. I really just sucked at everything else.

“I’d been fired from every job, and did a serious acting course and met a fellow comedian who sold me on it, so hopefully it sticks or I’ll be out on the street.”

Not content with just doing comedy shows, Little has also branched out to both radio and television, with a 21/2-year stint as one half of Nova 100’s breakfast team and continued fill-ins in the funny chair for The Project.

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow returns to Bunbury on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28.
