Tourist dump spot opens in Capel

A dump point in Capel officially opened this week with the hope of bringing economic growth to the community and eliminate illegal dumping of waste in the South West.

The Campervan and Motor Home Club of Australia donated the dump point unit and WA representative Bevin Martin said it was part of their plan to make travel easier and more accessible for holiday makers.

“We have donated 40 per cent of public dump points in WA and it is part of what we see as a strategic filling for dump points around the state,” he said.

“WA has been known to lack dump points and without this people will dump their waste illegally.”

Tourism WA provided $17,663 and the Capel facility is one of at least 20 new black waste dump points being added to WA’s inventory through the State Government’s Western Australian Caravan and Camping Action Plan: 2013-2018, made possible by Royalties for Regions, said Tourism Western Australia chief executive officer Stephanie Buckland.

“Now in its third year, the multi-agency action plan is providing a range of new and improved sites, facilities and services to make WA the destination of choice for camping, caravan and RV visitors,” she said.

Forrest MHR Nola Marino contributed $17,300 as part of the Stronger Communities Project funding and said it gave people a reason to stop in and spend money in the town.

Capel shire council chief executive officer Paul Sheedy said a stopover area was planned for construction by council in 2016-17 and the dump point was part of encouraging visitors to the town.

“These are just two examples of actions that council are making to encourage visitors and tourists into the town to stop and spend some money further enhancing the local businesses economic outlook,” he said.
