Trailer provides on job training

South Western Times

The South West Institute of Technology has unveiled a $25,000 oneof- a-kind trailer which will allow lecturers to provide on location training across the region.

Designed by SWIT’s Resource and Mining Team and built by GT Fabrication, the trailer gives a portable platform for lecturers to provide working at heights, working in confined spaces and fire warden and fire extinguisher training.

Resource and Mining Team coordinator Jason Bayes said the trailer was developed in response to a massive demand from industry.

“There is nothing else like this in the area and we’ve received a lot of interest in the services the trailer allows us to provide,” he said.

“It’s very attractive to employers because it allows us to go to them and minimises the amount of time workers have to spend off site.

“Along with the trailer, all we need is a carpark and a small classroom.”

The trailer allows lecturers to tailor training depending on the needs of individual employers, from mining companies and building contractors through to abattoirs and wineries.

Mr Bayes said the trailer was already in demand and there was an opportunity to expand on the courses it provided in the future.

“We picked the trailer up last month and actually used it to provide a training session that day,” he said.

“With a little more equipment we’ll also be able to offer gas testing and monitoring and emergency response training.”

“There are a number of additions that can be made and we’ll monitor demand to prioritise those.”
