Triple treat with tutus
In Rimbombo, dancer David Power plays a hot-headed classroom bully, intent on getting to the top no matter who he has to step on.
Rimbombo is one of the three ballets on The Dancers Company Classical Triple Bill, coming to the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on August 16.
The bill includes romantic ballet Paquita and Act 3 of the well-known classic Swan Lake. The production is being toured throughout Australia by the regional touring arm of The Australian Ballet.
Although switching between characters can be as challenging as switching between stage venues in different towns, Power wouldn’t have it any other way.
“It is amazing to be able to travel with your craft, ” he said.
“It really is the pinnacle of what you work for — to travel and bring such high quality dance to rural places.”
The three ballets are vastly different to showcase the dancers’ diverse skills, ranging from the traditional Swan Lake to the rambunctious and acrobatic Rimbombo.
“It’s awesome to hear the crowd’s reaction and it changes everywhere, ” Power said.
“Some places we get a great reception to Rimbombo but in others there is a more traditional crowd that prefers Swan Lake.”
“The thing is we have a 20 minute interval to change make-up, costumes, everything.
“We really have to put in that extra little bit of effort to get into the character because when the curtain comes up you have to be that character.”
During their tour to Bunbury, two lucky dancers from The Studio of Classical and Contemporary Dance will have the chance participate in a master class with the Australian Ballet.
Principal and studio owner Amy Barningham said it was an exciting prospect for her students.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for them to work with such a high calibre of dancers in Bunbury — it is a big inspiration, ” she said.
