Ugly is a beautiful fundraiser for Leukaemia

South Western Times

Bartenders in and around Bunbury are battling it out to see if they can be the U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year.

Yesterday, contestants in the South West began raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The Ugly, Generous, Likeable, You contestant who raises the most money will be named the U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year.

At the Parade Hotel, Petrina Martin and her team will hold a series of events to have fun and raise money.

‘‘We’ll have a fashion parade with a twist, an op-shop ball, hopefully a quiz night,’’ she said.

The Parade Hotel has registered to try to raise $1000, but they will see if they can raise more.

Parade bartender Hayley Palumbo said there were also small games they would do each day to raise money.

‘‘You can’t help but get behind something like this,’’ she said.

‘‘The Leukaemia Foundation is doing great work, and the U.G.L.Y contest raises funds especially for regional families.

‘‘Cancer has touched us all in one way or another, and we all know what it’s like to have to go to Perth for medical care.’’

For every $80 that is raised, a regional family has a place to stay for a night while in Perth for cancer treatment.

‘‘This is a fun way to raise money for a serious cause,’’ Ms Martin said.

Contestants will be raising money from October until early November.
