Unleashing The Stingrays

HAYDN TUIASouth Western Times

Music minions get excited, garage power pop work horses The Chevelles are rolling into town — and they are bringing their surfboards with them.

No strangers to the South West, the boys from Perth will return to the stage at the Prince of Wales Hotel tomorrow night and it will be a performance with a twist.

Unleashing their alter-ego surf band The Stingrays outside of Perth for the first time, fans will be treated to a mammoth set of vintage sound waves including selections from their extensive back catalogue of hits, released under their more well-known persona.

Visiting the newly-revamped venue as part of their extensive 21st Anniversary World Tour through the US, Australia,Europe and Brazil, bassist Jeff Halley said the band was looking forward to introducing South West fans to the band’s other side.

‘‘We love a lot of Beach Boys and instrumental stuff — the odd Hawaiian shirt has been known to make an appearance,’’ Halley said.

Hitting the road hard playing venues around the country before taking the tour overseas, there are no signs the band plan on slowing down any time soon, signing a new five-album worldwide recording and publishing deal.

Working on their seventh album which will make an appearance late this year, Halley said the band had returned to its early garage rock roots and would not sacrifice quality to make a quick buck.

‘‘We went into this knowing it this would probably be our last deal, but we’re still about quality, not quantity,’’he said.

‘‘The thing for us is it’s still great fun, you get to tour America with your mates and drink beer — we’re living the dream.’’

In keeping with the band’s love for surf rock, the school mates grew up playing music between beach trips and are hoping to sneak a surf in before answering the call of the open road once more.

‘‘We have surfed around the world and the South West is the best place to surf in the world,’’ Halley said.

Packed to the rafters with hard rock and roll and punctuated with sprays of summery surf pop, he Chevelles featuring The Stingrays will take the stage from 8pm.
