Uplifting Noongar comedy Dating Black to take over Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre

Following a sell-out season in Perth, a new Noongar comedy is set to hit the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre stage later this month for an exclusive one night only performance.

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company’s Dating Black will travel to Bunbury for the final night of its West Australian tour on April 27, sharing the wonderfully witty, authentic and hilarious story about finding love a second time around.

A debut script from First Nations playwright Narelle Thorne, BREC executive director Fiona De Garis said the show will dazzle audiences with its warmth, relevance, humour and insight.

“Narelle Thorne is an incredible West Australian talent,” she said.

“A proud Wajarri and Noongar woman, she developed this play over two years in honour of her stepdad, whom she considers her true Dad. It is a play anyone who has searched for true love for a second time can relate to, as it is packed full of real life experiences.

“I am so pleased we have been able to partner with Yirra Yaakin to bring this universal human story to BREC.”

Centring on Djinda, a woman fresh out of a bad marriage and looking for love again, the play follows her journey into dating apps to find her true love.

However, there are challenges ahead for Djinda as she navigates the modern-day landscape as a Blackfella, looking for romance but needing to first make sure possible partners are not related!

Djinda’s over-protective brother is also waiting in the wings to make sure she does not get hurt again.

Then there’s the very smooth Justin, who may just be too good to be true. But no one comes without baggage after 30. Right?

A performance not to be missed, the community is invited to attend pre-show entertainment from 6.30pm, to enjoy wine tasting with Capel Vale, round robin table tennis, song, and the launch of BREC Social — a new initiative aimed at solo theatregoers.
