Firefighters from Bunbury's Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service tested their mettle in Perth at the weekend and brought home the awards to show their skills are up to scratch.

Bunbury father and son John and Dylan Kowal were among the brigade's competitors to receive honours at the 2015 VFRS State Championships.

The annual event attracts volunteer firefighters from across Western Australia and some competitors travelling from Victoria.

Bunbury VFRS captain John Kowal has been to more than 30 State Championships and said competing provided invaluable rewards.

"Not only does the competition enhance our firefighting skills but the camaraderie and sportsmanship is absolutely sensational," said Mr Kowal.

Eight volunteers from Bunbury competed in a number of races during the two-day event.

The team finished first in several races - including the ladder race and three wet hose events - which required competitors to perform real-life training and skills.

Mr Kowal said that going into the final race, his team was in first place by three points but was "pipped" at the finish line.

The Bunbury brigade finished second overall in its class.

The team's greatest achievement, though, was perhaps in the naming of 21-year-old Dylan as the C-class champion firefighter.

"We are so very proud of Dylan as individual events are extremely hard on each of the competitors and therefore each event demands a great level of fitness, discipline and concentration," said his dad.
