WA Election: Marginal seat the one to watch

CLARE NEGUSSouth Western Times

Collie-Preston will be a seat to watch on Saturday when sitting MLA Mick Murray goes up against the Liberals’ election debutante Jaimee Motion.

Collie-Preston is considered a marginal Labor seat for Mr Murray who was re-elected at the last election with only a 2 per cent margin.

Analysts have put Mr Murray’s margin at 3.8 per cent, after opinion polls and boundary redistribution.

Eaton and Capel have featured heavily in proposals by both parties.

The Liberals promised to build a bridge over the Collie River to connect Eaton and Treendale. Labor promised to build a police station in Capel.

Collie was also put in the spotlight with both parties committing millions to upgrade the Coalfields Highway.

Ms Motion has talked up her background as a government media advisor, saying she would have “direct access to the decision makers that matter”.

Mr Murray has said the Liberal Government’s inner-city focus meant the South West missed out.

He said he had been a strong advocate for the region.

He promised to bring more attention and funding to Collie, saying if Labor was elected the Collie Future Fund would be reinstated and an inquiry would be held into Collie’s coal industry.

The Liberals promised to open Wellington Dam to more recreation uses and provide water security for nearby industry and agriculture.
