WAFL Grand Final: Margaret River’s Harrison Marsh stars as Subiaco claim fifth premiership in eight years

Margaret River’s Harrison Marsh has become a WAFL premiership player for the second time. The former Sydney Swan produced an inspirational performance on grand final day, leading his Subiaco side to a 13.7 (85) to 5.11 (41) victory over South Fremantle, reaffirming them as the league’s premier club. His three-goal, 25 disposal performance earned him the maximum three Simpson Medal votes from the umpires, leaving him third in the overall count behind teammates Greg Clark and Will Hickmott. Marsh was injected in to the middle during the Lions’ dominant third quarter — a period of play which would prove to be decisive. “I think we needed to lift after half-time. Souths were getting on top a little bit, so as a collective we needed to focus on getting first hands on it and we were able to do that which is obviously really pleasing,” Marsh told Channel 7. His third goal, deep in the final quarter, would prove to be the last of the game, prompting wild celebrations on the half-forward line. More WAFL: Asked about the celebration, Marsh said he was following the lead of premiership skipper Leigh Kitchin, who hoisted his star teammate into the air. “There was nothing special, I just love kicking goals,” he said. “I think Kitch hammed it up a bit, so I just went with it.” The East Fremantle colts product arrived at Leederville Oval after a 25-game career with Sydney and won a premiership in his first year, also against South Fremantle, at Optus Stadium. His younger brother, East Fremantle Shark Jonathon Marsh, also returned to the WAFL this season after a 26-game AFL career over two separate stints with Collingwood and St Kilda.
