Walking to school, the way to go
Bunbury Primary School will join a number of primary schools across Australia in the 13th annual Walk Safely to School Day on May 18.
The event promotes regular walking, public transport, reduced car dependency, cleaner air, improved diets and road safety to primary school children around the nation.
Principal Shane Doherty praised the idea and said it was a great way for students to enjoy the benefits of exercise as well as reducing congestion.
‘‘Walking to school is an important part of school life because it gives students an opportunity to socialise before school as well as the health aspects of it,’’ Mr Doherty said.
‘‘For our school the less traffic we have the better because congestion is an issue.’’
Pedestrian Council chairman Harold Scruby said it was important to create regular walking habits at an early age and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
‘‘Participation in regular, moderate intensity physical activity and a balanced and nutritious diet are proven factors in controlling overweight and obesity, but also for general good health and wellbeing,’’ Mr Scruby said.
‘‘Healthy and active children live better and learn better and grow up to be more healthy and active adults.’’
Mr Scruby urged all parents and carers to get involved in the event.
‘‘We want to encourage all parents, carers and teachers to promote safe walking for children,’’ he said.
‘‘Everyone can participate — if you need to drive, park the car 10 minutes away from school and walk the rest of the way.’’
