Warning against prank text messages

Multiple prank text messages sent to people across WA have alarmed police officers.

The text received generally states that “I have buried the body like you told me to. What do you want me to do now?”

The messages are sent to random phone numbers from anonymous people have come from people in WA and interstate.

Police stress that these messages are not legitimate and are pranks.

Those who send these messages are reminded that they may face charges in relation to creating a false belief and/or misuse of a telephone service.

Offenders face imprisonment and substantial fines if convicted.

They may also be liable for the cost of the police investigation which may also be significant.

Queensland police have already identified a person allegedly sending these messages and WA Police have identified a number of individuals in WA. Charges are yet to be laid.

Any members of the public who receive these texts are asked to report them to police on 131 444 or to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
