Warriors name new coach

MITCHELL WOODCOCKSouth Western Times

The South West Warriors will have a new head coach in Alec Lindsay this season as they enter the first grade of the NRL WA competition.

Lindsay, who hails from the heartland of northern England, has taken over from Ru Davis — who is the club president this year.

Lindsay played high levels of rugby league in Britain and served in the military as a professional strength and conditioning trainer.

After serving coaching apprenticeships with minor league teams, Lindsay earned a role on the coaching staff of professional outfit Doncaster “the Dons” Rugby League Football Club under then-head coach and former Super League player Paul Cooke.

Lindsay said it would be a big challenge taking the Warriors into their first season at the highest grade in the State.

“We will come together as a group though, ” he said.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of it all really.”

Lindsay said he would implement particular team goals as well as a strong defensive structure for the season ahead.

“The club has a lot of ambition moving forward and I do as well, ” he said.

“We are looking at a higher level of professionalism.”

Lindsay said he had no pressure from the board to have instant success this season.

“I can see us surprising some people and getting a few wins, ” he said.

Vice president Terry Evans said the club was pleased to attract a quality coach like Lindsay.

“Alec will bring to our club the professionalism and calmness that will be needed as we make the transition into NRL WA first grade division, ” he said.

“It is an exciting time as we move into our newly constructed stadium at Hay Park South, our promotion and to expand our coaching staff with international professionals.”

Pre-season training for the club begins on Tuesday, January 12 at 6pm at Hay Park South.
