Bunbury City Council is yet to secure funding for the highly anticipated water playground.

The council will today begin preparation work to build footpaths, picnic tables, barbecues, lighting and shelter to complement a future water playground on Koombana Drive.

The council says the community has been calling for a water park for years but it was still investigating funding options to build the tourist attraction.

The project will include working with the Goomburup Aboriginal Corporation to build interpretive signs.

In a statement announcing the work, Mayor Gary Brennan said the water playground would attract tourists to Bunbury once it was completed.

Mr Brennan said he was thrilled the preliminary works were set to begin.
