Wellesley bushfire could threaten homes

A power pole has ignited a fire near Kemerton Industrial Park which has burnt more than 20 hectares is threatening homes this afternoon.

An 'watch and act' alert has been for people in the north eastern part of Wellesley in the Shire of Harvey with the uncontrolled fire posing a possible threat to lives and homes.

Bush Fire Brigades from Brunswick Junction, Dardanup, Leschenault and Uduc were battling the blaze.

Ground crews are being supported four water bombers and a type-1 helicopter as changing winds began fanning the fames.

Burning between Marriot Road and Wellesley Road, the fire was reported shortly before 11.55am this morning and by 1pm had torn through 20ha.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority is urging residents in the area to leave or prepare to actively defend their homes.

People with homes in the affected area but who are away are advised not to return due to dangerous road conditions.

A FESA spokesman said only those residents who were prepared to the highest level to stay and protect their homes should remain.

All those who are unprepared and decided to flee their homes were told to take a survival kit with them.

FESA are warning people to be extremely careful while travelling on or near Old Coast Road between Forestry Road, Myalup and Marriot Road, Australind due to smoke reducing visibility in the area.

The intersection of Rosamel Road and Marriot Road, Wellesley Road north and Marriot Road, and Old Coast Road and Wellesley Road are closed.
