Wesley wins from the front
Bunbury trainer Sarah Wall has claimed the biggest victory of her career to date, when two-year-old Wesley won the $50,000 Monford Group Champagne Stakes (2130m) on Friday night.
Starting as a $34.80 favourite, Wesley caused a boilover, with reinsman Kaiden Hayter scoring a great win.
"We planned to take trail with Wesley," Hayter said.
"But he was fired up at the start and wanted to lead. He relaxed when in front."
Wall said Wesley had great temperament and good race etiquette.
"He is a quality horse," she said.
"His number one attribute is he is quite mature.
"Where others struggle to handle the track he has no gate issues."
Wall and Wesley will now aim for the $100,000 Golden Slipper Pace (2130m) in July, but first they have a number of group two races to win.
Wesley is paddocked for the week, but is set to run in the heats for the $100,000 Pearl Final.
"All going well he should get into the final," Wall said.
"If he does well in those then the Slipper is the last race we will look at giving him as a two-year-old and then we will give him a spell."
