Whales spotted off Bunbury beach
At least two southern right whales have been spotted frolicking in shallow water at Bunbury Back Beach this morning.
Surfers, beach-goers and a lone, brave stand-up paddle boarder got a close-up look of the endangered whales, which looked to be moving slowly south.
Dolphin Discovery Centre marine biologist Phil Coulthard said it was normal for whales to be showing up this time of year.
“Some might be pregnant, some might be relaxing and some might be playful – they’d just be hanging out,” he said.
“They’re an endangered species, so it is a privilege to see the southern rights out there.”
