Will you be safe at home this winter?

The upcoming green waste collection for the Bunbury area provides a "perfect opportunity" for residents to avoid storm damage this winter, according to the State Emergency Service.

Bunbury City Council has scheduled the first collection of waste such as tree and shrub prunings for May 11.

Bunbury SES manager Chris Widmer said 85 per cent of storm damage could be avoided if residents were properly prepared.

"The green waste collection is a good reminder for people to start cleaning up their yards now," he said.

"It really makes it easier for people to avoid serious damage and it's not hard to do."

Mr Widmer said it was frustrating getting called to jobs that could easily be avoided.

"The SES is made up of volunteers who have to leave work when called to jobs, which means we're not getting paid," he said.

"We only provide temporary repairs, not permanent; to keep people safe and we have even attended houses a second time for repairs we did the year before."

A record 51 families requested help for damage at their homes in the Bunbury SES's biggest storm response last year.

Mr Widmer said people should clear gutters, cut overhanging tree branches and make sure power lines were clear in preparation for winter.

"The council is doing their bit by providing the green waste collection, I just hope the community now does their part," he said.

He also reminded people that insurance companies should be contacted for accidents and the SES should only be contacted out of business hours.
