Workshop takes students from page to stage
Stark Raven Theatre Company is offering aspiring South West actors and directors an opportunity to learn from some of Bunbury’s theatrical talent at a workshop in May.
From Page to Stage is a threehour class to develop participants’ dramatic performance skills. It aims to give them the tools to transform a script from simple words to believable actions.
Conducted by Stark Raven Theatre Company director Sharon Kennedy, with the help of accomplished Bunbury actors Rhys Hughes and Ron Tait, the workshop will focus on the Stanislavski and Laban methods of movement analysis.
“We’ll be teaching participants how to effectively convey emotion through action and proper theatre movement,” Mr Hughes said.
“When it comes to acting, the director would always prefer you to overact rather than under act and that is something beginning performers sometimes do not understand.
“We’ll also focus on developing an understanding of the text you are working with and the actor’s objective and motive.”
Stark Raven Theatre Company will conduct separate workshops for high school students and adults.
Both classes will make use of a short scene from the group’s upcoming production, Sleuth.
“I’d encourage anyone who is interested in acting to attend because Sharon really is an amazingly talented director,” Mr Hughes said.
“She has been a mentor to me for a while now and has equipped me with tools that have helped my career to come on in leaps and bounds.”
The From Page to Stage workshops take place at Stagelight Studio on Bourke Street on May 18 and 25 for high school students and May 5 and 19 for adults.
The classes cost $10 for students and $15 for adults.
