The work of talented artists from the region’s high schools were thrust into the spotlight and analysed with a fine tooth comb when the Iluka Visions exhibition was judged on Monday.

The judging panel included Bunbury Regional Art Galleries director Julian Bowron, ECU art education lecturer Mike Bandurski, ECU South West arts program coordinator Donna Mazza and art historian and curator Diana Roberts.

Ms Roberts said she always looked forward to casting her eye over the talents of the region.

“I’m not a practising artist, but I’m passionate about seeing the art scene grow in the region,” she said.

“This year I was looking for a different approach. I was looking for technical skills, material handling and the level of conceptual thinking and exploration.”

She said picking the winners was never easy because there were always so many to choose from.

“In previous Visions we have uncovered absolutely superb artworks, which demonstrated how innovative and creative young people can be,” Ms Roberts said.

“You have to consider each piece for its elements alone.

“Some artworks bring all the elements together at an interesting or intellectual level, usually through emotion or thought provoking concepts.”

Ms Roberts said the exhibition allowed students to explore where they stood in the art world.

“It’s good for young people to learn and enjoy themselves through showcasing their work,” she said.

The Iluka Visions winners will be announced at an official awards ceremony on October 26.
