Young golfers shine

Some of the State’s best junior golfers travelled to the Capel Golf Club at the weekend to compete in the annual Capel Junior Open.

Perfect conditions and smooth-rolling greens greeted competitors, with many youngsters on single-figure handicaps teeing off throughout the two-day competition.

The 36-hole event attracted 34 boys and six girls, and the winner was the player with the best gross score.

Alexander Allcock, 17, scored 145 across the two days to become the male winner, while 13-year-old Maddison Tolchard scored 149 to win the girl’s competition.

Maddison said the course was in good condition and she enjoyed the competition.

“I birdied the third hole, ” she said.

“I hit over the back of the green in two and chipped it onto the green before putting it in.”

Maddison said her consistent driving was one of her strengths throughout the two days of play.

“I putted really well and that helped a lot, ” she said.

Alexander said weather conditions helped his game.

He said a birdie on the second hole was the highlight of his weekend.

“I just dropped it within a couple of feet and sunk the putt, ” he said.

Alexander agreed driving was a pivotal part of playing at the Capel Golf Club.

“It is a tricky course, but I kept it on the fairway which really helped, ” he said.

The male nett winner from the weekend was Yanni Keenan, while female net winner was Georgia Garner-Dent, who also won the team event with Lara Donaldson.
