Youths put brakes on homelessness

One of WA’s most notable mass cycling events will be a chance for three Bunbury residents to help an organisation that has helped them.

The Santos Great Bike Ride takes place in Perth this Sunday to raise money for the Heart Foundation, Hope for Children and St John of God Horizon House.

Kelsey Warhurst and Jasmine Mountford are two of the three Bunbury Horizon House residents who will be cycling the 53km course around the Swan River.

“The Great Bike Ride raises money to support charities such as the Horizon House, so it’s a worthy cause,” Ms Mountford said.

Ms Warhurst said it was a chance to give something back.

Twelve Horizon House residents from around WA were given new bicycles so they could take part in the event, which also includes a 106km leg and a 10km family ride.

St John of God Health Care Youth Services group manager Mike Board said all Horizon House residents taking part were excited.

“They will be preparing for the ride on their new bikes and looking forward to a great event that will help break the cycle of homelessness for more young people in Western Australia,” he said.

Horizon House provides long-term accommodation and intensive support for young people who have been homeless.
