Harvey’s Brady Hough loves nothing better than heading home to the South West when his commitments at the West Coast Eagles allow.

But last Thursday, heading into Bunbury had extra significance as Hough was officially crowned winner of the 2021 AJ (Tood) Buswell South Western Times Sports Star of the Year award.

Attending with his mum Fiona, Hough was extremely grateful to be recognised.

Despite the fact he is the first VFL/AFL player to have won the award, Hough’s year before being drafted was only taken into account, due to the fact it was during the 2021 judgment period.

“Thanks so much to the Buswell family,” Hough said.

“It is an absolute honour to have won this award. To have my name against some of the finalists nominated, yet alone those on this trophy? It is really special.”

Buswell family representative Pauline Maslin congratulated Hough on his achievement and outlined the award’s significance within her family.

“This has been a great award and has gone on for more than 50 years, when my uncle started it in honour of my grandfather,” she said.

The ceremony, which is normally held in late February, was postponed earlier this year due to COVID-19 protocols.

Bunbury soccer player Courtney Butlion and former winner Damian Lane, regarded as one of Australia’s best jockeys, rounded out the top three.

Next year, plans are in place for the 2022 ceremony to return to its regular place on the sporting calendar.
