Baton drops into Bunbury on way to Gold Coast

A slice of the Commonwealth Games will be in Bunbury this week when a welcome party is expected to cheer on the city’s chosen baton bearers.

Bunbury City Council is throwing the party to mark the arrival of the Queen’s Baton and celebrate the residents set to carry it through the city’s streets on Friday.

The party will include entertainment and activities – including giant jenga – a sausage sizzle hosted by Bunbury City Band and a meet and greet with Commonwealth Games athlete Jayde Taylor and paralympian Brad Scott.

Deputy Mayor Jaysen Miguel said the council was looking forward to the baton’s arrival and encouraged the community to get involved.

“The batonbearers are those in our community who have done something special, usually selfless to help make Bunbury a better place to live,” Cr Miguel said.

“It is truly an honour to be included in the Queen’s Baton Relay and the city is grateful the organisers included Bunbury in the event as the baton makes its way around the country before ending up in Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games.

“We are asking the community to get behind the relay by joining us down at the Graham Bricknell Music Shell to welcome the batonbearers.

“People are also encouraged to line the streets of the relay route to applaud the batonbearers as they undertake this important task.”

The route begins at Lovegrove Aveneue, making its way along Spencer, Wittenoom and Symmons streets before heading towards the Back Beach, through Marlston Hill and onto Victoria Street.

It will finish at the Graham Bricknell Memorial Music Shell where the party is taking place between 12pm and 2pm.
