Bunbury design takes honours in building awards

A building in Treendale’s commercial heart has beaten the metropolitan competition to win an award at the Building Designers Association of WA awards last month.

Coote Commercial Project was named the Best Commercial Design Under $2 million and one of two winning designs by Bunbury-based design firm Veen’s Design Group.

The group was also awarded the Best Commercial Alteration/Addition Up To $1 Million, for their work on Enable South West.

Designer Roger Veen said the aim of Coote’s design was simply to stand out from regular commercial buildings, particularly with its location at the Grand Entrance to Treendale near the Junction Shopping Centre.

“Something that made a difference there and was going to stand alone,” Mr Veen said.

“Instead of designing a box we wanted to make a facade that was interesting for people driving in and driving out.”

Mr Veen said it was a good feeling to win at the awards which often went to the companies in Perth.

“You tend to be up against Perth or the metropolitan area and it’s nice to win one for the country,” he said.

Winners from the State awards are now finalists for the national association awards in New South Wales next month.

“Hopefully we can come away with another one,” he said.
