A South West bird and flower lover has taken his passion for photography beyond the lens to help other budding artists capture the perfect shot.

Bunbury’s Chris Tate, pictured, has used his experience to put together a guidebook for photographing some of the beautiful nature on offer in WA.

The book, Photographing Our Brilliant West Australian Birds and Wild Flowers, is the award-winning photographer’s first as an author and serves as an encouragement for anyone wanting to take the leap into the world of pictures.

“It’s not about technical jargon, it’s a reference guide for those interested — for mum and dad, people just getting started or anyone who wants to take a photo,” Mr Tate said.

I want to encourage people to use what they have, because you don’t need fancy equipment to take a nice photograph.

Rather than focusing on which equipment to use, Mr Tate gives tips on how to compose images in the frame, how to best capture the shot of a bird or flower and shares what he thinks makes a unique photo.

“To me photography is about creating interest,” he said.

“Anyone can take a photo of a flower, so what makes yours stand out? It should be unique, colourful and pictorial. Pictures need to tell a story, it makes it more powerful.”

Mr Tate hopes his anecdotes, tips and tricks will help budding photographers to hone their craft and make their photos more interesting.

After buying his first camera at 11 years old, Mr Tate was hooked on the world of photography but never imagined the success it could bring.

“I’ve had amazing luck with photo competitions,” he said.

“Some of the prizes have been a trip to Singapore and Melbourne, which were amazing.”

Mr Tate has taken photos for events such as Christmas Island Bird Week and has seen his work published in titles including Australian Geographic and Birdlife Australia.

“I love creative hobbies likes sculpting and painting, but photography is instant and that’s special,” Mr Tate said.

“It gets me outdoors, travelling and enjoying nature and provides me with some alone time.

“Photography is a great hobby because it’s an individual interest but you can find such a welcoming community to be a part of too, like the one in Bunbury.”
