Bunbury women to head to Denmark for group dance performance “uniting against violence”

More than 170 women from across the South West and Great Southern will join some of Australia’s leading dance artists for a showcase in Denmark later this month.

The dance performance, Chorus, has been two years in the making and will star women 14-70 years old with varying levels of dance experience.

Choreographer Annette Carmichael said watching the performance was quite an emotional experience.

“Audiences will have never experienced a performance quite like this.”

Professional dancers work with the community performers to learn the dance at their home towns, with Vahri McKenzie supporting the Bunbury group.

“Chorus is a work for a large group of women that unites against violence,” Ms McKenzie said.

We’re all getting together to explore joyful and difficult and exciting and empowering emotions and experiences and sharing that with the community.

Bunbury resident Lisa Gregory said she got involved with the project after seeing it on Facebook even though she had no previous dance experience.

“Rehearsals have been very intensive but I am so excited for the final show,” she said.

Ms Mckenzie and Ms Gregory will join 20 other women from Bunbury to perform in Chorus at Silverstream Wines, Denmark on February 29 and March 1.
