Carey Park overcome slow start
Carey Park repeated last week’s performance, overcoming a poor showing in the first half to defeat the Eaton Boomers 47-42 at the South West Sports Centre on Saturday.
The Boomers’ centre court of Jodie Clayton and Shakiah Wellington dominated in the first half and fed their accurate goalies Jessica Knight and Narele Alstead to have a 26-20 lead at half-time.
The Panthers made changes at the break, bringing Renee Cashell into goal shooter alongside Sophie Bell, but this only stopped the lead from increasing and the Boomers still had a five-goal advantage going into the last quarter.
Whatever Panthers coach Michelle Willsher said to her players in the break stirred them up as defenders Vaezarn Bishop and Paris Newman both stepped up with some timely intercepts.
They were backed up with Tia Wallace in wing defence and all of a sudden the momentum changed and the Boomers began to tire.
Bell and Cashell became unstoppable in the goal circle and Carey Park stormed ahead to post a five-goal win.
Bunbury started their double-header with a strong 58-44 win over Augusta-Margaret River.
Despite some accurate shooting from Hawks Jess Whitehead and Jade Briggs, Bunbury held a one goal lead at half-time.
Young Hawks goalkeeper Jaz Nielsen was producing some tight defence alongside Amy Smith at goal defence.
Bunbury were struggling to find any flow in attack and this combined with inaccurate shooting allowed the Hawks to stay within a goal going into the last quarter.
Bunbury made changes at the break with Sarah Lietch coming into wing attack, Leah Pitts into goal defence and Amy Hammond to goalkeeper.
The combination of Leitch and Rikki Hubber in attack added strong driving through the court, giving shooter Cass Anderson plenty of opportunities, as she increased Bunbury’s lead to help them claim the victory.
Bunbury then defeated Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault 56-46 on Sunday.
Shooters Cass Shine and Cassandra Anderson shot with a high percentage rate right from the start and this gave them a 27-25 at the long break.
Bunbury’s Leah Pitts, Asha Bygraves and Shaylee Green stepped up in the third quarter and they increased their lead to eight goals, meaning the Lions had to play catch up in the last quarter.
In the last game of the round Busselton easily accounted for South Bunbury, winning 62-40.
The Tigers produced three quarters of competitive netball with goal shooter Abbey Leyendekkers playing a strong game.
Ashlee Ritson returned to the centre court for Busselton and worked with Mia Pethybridge in attack to feed consistently to their accurate shooters in Emma Borinelli, Brooke Gibson and Maia Bratton. In the last quarter the Busselton defence line dominated on their way to the strong win.
