Collie Senior High School held an assembly with a difference on Tuesday – celebrating the official opening of the school’s new $7.5 million upgraded facilities.

And they hosted a few special guests, with Premier Mark McGowan, Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery and Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray there for the occasion.

The upgrade includes an extra eight classrooms – one specifically for information and communications technology and two others for inclusive learning – catering for an additional 130 students.

A top-notch science, technology, engineering and mathematics laboratory, commercial kitchen and cafe are also featured among the upgrades.

Mr Murray – who attended the school himself in his teenage years – said it was a “huge win” for local families.

After officially opening the upgraded facilities, the Premier was taken on a tour through the school, meeting staff and students and even sitting down for a game of UNO with one group of students.

Mr McGowan said his Government had committed almost $100 million in the last State Budget to “ensure every student has access to the best possible education, regardless of where they live.”

“I am pleased to see these upgrades to Collie Senior High School facilities are now complete,” he said. “This was a key election commitment for Collie, and the new, modern facilities will benefit local students for years to come.

“Our Government is investing unprecedented funds into Collie to ensure the town has a strong future and local families are provided with first-class services.”
