Data reveals which areas are the biggest internet users in the South West

Data released by the nbn has revealed Capel residents to be the biggest downloaders of content, while Nannup consumed the least in the South West.

The numbers show Capel residents downloaded 468 gigabytes on average per month, just 4GB more than Harvey.

Dardanup, Collie and Waroona were the other three local government areas to have an average of more than 400GB.

On the other end of the spectrum, Nannup had the smallest average monthly downloads with 175GB, just 37 per cent of Capel’s usage.

Boyup Brook was the second smallest with 219GB, less than Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Manjimup with 285GB and 289GB respectively.

The bigger towns found themselves in the middle of the pack with Bunbury downloading 378GB per month and Busselton 313.

An nbn spokesperson said technology and demographics were key factors in which areas used more data.

“There are a multitude of reasons why different areas will have different data usage, including technology, speed tier mix and demographics,” the spokesperson said.

“The average Australian nbn user downloaded around 423GB per month, an increase of more than 50 per cent compared to three years ago. 423 GB is the equivalent of downloading episode one of The Simpsons from a streaming platform 2708 times.

“Data usage in the regions is continuing to grow, up 6 per cent compared to October last year.”
