On the banks of the Preston River, members of the Donnybrook-Balingup community enjoyed a COVID-Safe Australia Day last week.

The Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup received a $20,000 grant to host the celebrations in a COVID-safe environment which was held in the idyllic setting of the Donnybrook Amphitheatre.

Welcoming seven new citizens to the community, shire president Brian Piesse said Australia Day was about coming together as a community.

“It was great to see so many families embracing the ‘one and free’ changes to our National Anthem”, Cr Piesse said.

“The National Australia Day Council’s generosity has allowed us to reflect, respect and celebrate in a safe environment.

“While we congratulate the recipients of our 2021 Awards, there are so many willing volunteers making worthwhile contributions to our communities that deserve recognition and thanks.”

Gemma Rosman was announced the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup Youth Citizen of the Year winner for all her efforts as a volunteer within the community.

Ms Rosman has been part of the the shire’s volunteer fire and rescue service, the youth reference group for Headspace in Bunbury and often helps out with events around the town.

“I was quite surprised to receive this award,” Ms Rosman said.

“I first got involved with volunteering in high school, I really enjoy helping people out and making a difference where I can.

If anyone wants to have a say in how the community works and make changes happen they should get involved as a volunteer.

Russell Price took home the Senior Community Citizen of the Year award while Joanne Swarbrick was announced the Community Citizen of the Year award winner.

Donnybrook Arts and Crafts Group were the winners of the active group or event category.
