Downwind Classic to throw competitors many challenges

Stratham Beach will be a hive of activity this afternoon (Saturday), when the 2019 City of Bunbury Downwind Classic starts from 2pm.

Competitors will complete a 15km downwind paddle course, which will finish at the City of Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club.

Ahead of the event, City of Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club director of surf sports James Duncan explained some of the intricate components required for the arduous course.

“The biggest thing is it is a mixture of endurance but also a lot of speed,” he said.

“There are a lot of things you need to have going for you to get competent at it — and at the same time, you really need to know the water and how it works.

“In terms of where the waves are coming from and be really good at cutting and running. All these little things that come with the surf.

“There’s a lot of aspects to it involving fitness and skill.”

For those who may be keen to keep an eye on proceedings from afar, Duncan highlighted locations where they can get a solid glimpse of the action.

“We are really lucky down here because we have several high vantage points up towards Hastie Street,” he said. “Anywhere from Hastie Street to the City of Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club, you can get a really good view of the race.

“Between 3.30pm and 3.45pm onwards, you will be able to see the paddlers coming past over the last 4km.

“We will also be going past Dalyellup as well — so really anywhere along the coast from Stratham Beach to Bunbury you will see everyone come past.”

Once the race has concluded, presentations will be held at the City of Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club.
