Electoral roll set to close on Thursday ahead of Federal election

Voters across the country have been reminded to enrol or update their details with the Australian Electoral Commission by Thursday evening.

Electoral commissioner Tom Rogers said all Australian citizens aged 18 years and over are required by law to enrol and vote in the Federal election on May 18.

“Enrolling and voting is compulsory,” he said.

“If you are not enrolled, you can’t vote in the 2019 Federal election.

“Australians must also update their address details on the electoral roll if they have moved, or changed their name.”

He said it was an extraordinary achievement to have a record 96.5 per cent of eligible Australians enrolled.

“At the same time, there are still people who remain unenrolled who need to take action before the deadline,” he said.

The easiest way to enrol or update your details is to visit aec.gov.au or paper enrolment forms are available at AEC offices of Australia Post.

Those turning 17 on or before May 18 should also enrol in order to have their say in the Federal election.
