Focus on staying alive on the road

South West councillors have joined forces in the lead-up to Easter to ask the community to accept that road trauma is preventable.

The South West Regional Road Group and Western Australian Local Government Association’s RoadWise committee are collaborating to spread road safety messages with the long weekend just around the corner.

South West Regional Road Group elected members chairman Cr Peter Robinson said the Blessing of the Roads campaign and other Easter road safety messages gave an opportunity to remember that road trauma was preventable.

“Road safety is about working together and the Blessing of the Roads campaign is reminding us that we should not accept that anyone should die or be seriously injured on our roads,” Cr Robinson said.

“This Easter weekend, we are asking everyone to think about the number of deaths and serious injuries they are willing to accept and that we can achieve zero.”

He said the focus needed to be on the seven out of 10 crashes that were caused by human error.

“Driving is not meant to be a relaxing time, driving is very important and requires full attention,” he said.

The Blessing of the Roadscampaign aims to build community support for the long-term vision and actions to achieve zero deaths and serious injuries from road crashes.

The double demerit period starts from midnight Wednesday and runs until Monday night.
