Gallery: Graduates take to the streets of Bunbury
A renowned Indigenous performer and two published authors, all from the South West, joined more than 150 graduates at the Edith Cowan University graduation ceremony at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on Saturday.
The academic procession made its way down Victoria Street as part of the Fringe street party before attending the official ceremony.
Dr Lynette Narkle was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts, recognising her dedication and outstanding contributions to the development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing arts.
Local authors Dr Sally Murphy and Dr Nicole Sinclair both graduated with PhDs in creative writing.
ECU South West campus dean Lyn Farrell said the celebratory occasion reminded her and her colleagues of “why we do what we do”.
“It’s always lovely to see students who have been so successful and we appreciate that the numbers of graduates are growing,” she said.
“It’s about acknowledging the students’ achievements and the start of their professional journeys, so it’s always an exciting time.
“I really hope that our graduation – and the fact that we paraded through the street – reminds people that the opportunity to study at every level is available in the South West and that we can support whatever aspirations they have in their professional lives.”
Ms Farrell said she was particularly pleased the university had the opportunity to recognise Dr Narkle’s significant contribution.
