Harvey product Ethan Hughes continued to state his case for an AFL recall after another impressive match for Peel Thunder at the weekend.

Hughes was named in the best for Peel in their 73-point demolition of the WAFL Eagles ahead of the Dockers’ Saturday night elimination final against the Western Bulldogs.

The win means the Thunder are in the top five for now, with a clash against Swan Districts on Sunday to decide who goes through.

The former Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault player intercepted well during the match and barely lost a one-on-one contest in defence to push his case for an AFL recall.

The defender recorded 20 disposals and six marks on the day to close out a regular season where he has averaged 18 touches and five marks.

Hughes was a travelling emergency for Fremantle’s 20-point win over Greater Western Sydney in round 23 and has played just six games for the Dockers in 2022 — his lowest number since 2018.

Elsewhere at the WAFL level, Swan Districts’ South West stars Aidan Clarke and Tobe Watson helped power their team to an upset victory over ladder-leaders West Perth.

The Swans went into the match needing a win to keep their season alive, scraping home 9.5 (59) to 6.11 (47).

Bunbury’s Clarke and Donnybrook’s Watson were both named in the best for their side after recording 26 and 16 touches respectively.
