High school’s waste program gets a boost

Newton Moore Education Support Centre has received a $2516 grant through the Waste Wise Schools program which will allow it to buy more recycling bins and a shed to store bins and trolleys.

The centre’s 74 students help reduce waste with recycling bins in each of their classrooms, which is sorted in an on-site compound – complete with a lift mechanism to empty smaller bins into recycling skip bins.

Coordinator Dianne Purdue said the program, which began in 2006, had evolved to become bigger and better each year.

“We have choices about the difference we make and our younger generation needs to take a stand,” she said.

“It’s a great program because students actively learn and see the impact.”
