A maiden first-class hundred is the latest achievement in a breakout campaign for Bunbury batter Jayden Goodwin, who has made significant headway towards sealing his place in WA’s all-conquering red ball outfit. The Colts Cricket Club product reached three figures for the first time at State level against Queensland at the WACA Ground last Friday, hitting 115 runs from 268 deliveries. A strong summer for the 22-year-old started when, playing his first Sheffield Shield game in nearly two years, he posted his maiden first-class 50, making 63 against Victoria at the WACA Ground in October. He was then unluckily dropped from the side due to returning international players but made a big impression with his next opportunity, making a critically-important fourth-innings 47 not out to help his side secure a two-wicket win over South Australia in November. The Big Bash League break gave Goodwin the chance to face an international bowling attack for the first time, coming up with 18 and 33 for a Cricket Australia XI in a warm-up game against the West Indies in January. A promotion to No.3 after the resumption of red ball cricket started in forgettable fashion with a pair of low scores against New South Wales, but he then made a brilliant 85 on the road against ladder-leaders Tasmania before reaching three figures against the Bulls.
