Men’s basketball wrap: Aces White pull off comeback of the season in golden upset
Aces White pulled off an upset with an 81-78 win over Bulls Gold on Tuesday night with one of the best comebacks of the season.
White trailed Gold by 11 going into the final quarter and closed the gap fast thanks to a three-pointer by Thomas Jacob starting a scoring spree.
A foul drawn and a three-pointer from Gold’s Grayden Read got their lead out to seven points, but White immediately responded with another three-pointer by Thomas Jacob.
With two minutes left to play, White had come back to trail by three points, leading Gold to call a time-out.
This however gave White the boost they needed with Ben Lawler scoring four points in succession, followed by Gold drawing a foul to give White the win by three points.
Lawler was fantastic and Gold’s Byron Jonker was the game’s high-scorer.
White now have three wins this season, while Gold run the risk of dropping to third place on the ladder by the end of the season.
White next take on Tornadoes Black while Gold take on Bulls Maroon on Friday in the top of the table clash.
Tornadoes Black continue to close in on the last spot left in finals play-offs as they beat Aces Sky by 10 points, 91-81.
Scores were level at the first break, with the one-two punch of Black’s Travis McNaughton and Luc Perkins coming alive early in the second, giving Black an 18-point lead at half-time.
White’s Cosmo Pearce and Simon Slater went on a spree early in the second half to narrow the margin, but did not score enough to outscore Black.
Luc Perkins continues to close out his season on a high, having another stellar game this week.
Black now sit two wins away from fourth on the ladder, making the race to finals even tighter between them and the Conquerors.
Black next face Aces White on Friday while Aces Sky take on the Conquerors.
Bulls Maroon continued their season of domination with a 17-point win over Tornadoes Red.
Scores were evenly matched by the end of the first half with only a two-point margin at the major break.
Maroon upped the pressure in the third quarter with Travis Durnin going on a scoring spree to help give Maroon a 16-point lead at three quarter time.
A last-quarter blitz from Red’s Devain Craig, Jack Flynn and a stellar Daniel Bartlett was not enough to catch the charging Bulls who won 105-88.
This loss means Red sit dangerously close to slipping from finals contention, sitting only one win clear of third-placed Conquerors, while Gold has first place all but locked.
Gold take on Maroon next while Tornadoes Red next play Eaton Eagles.
Conquerors had a substantial win against the Eaton Eagles 119-99.
Playing with a last-second fill in to help the depleted Eagles side, the team put up a fair fight in the beginning, trailing by only nine points at quarter-time.
The second quarter saw Conquerors Jaikie Hastie get to work, scoring 14 points to give Conquerors a 22-point margin at half-time.
The Eagles managed to keep up with the Conquerors in the second half, scoring 50 points to the Conquerors’ 51, but that second-quarter spree proved to be the term that won the game for the Conquerors.
Eaton remain winless this season, while Conquerors close in on third place, one win away from Tornadoes Red.
Conquerors play Aces Sky on Friday while the Eagles take on Tornadoes Red.
