South West-raised jockey Damian Lane had a mixed day at the Lexus Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old hoop saddled up for six rides, with two third places his best across the day at Flemington.

In his third $7 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) start, Lane rode six-year-old New Zealand gelding Zacada ($101) to 13th out of 24 runners, while also claiming places aboard Into the Abyss and Haunted earlier in the day.

Lane will now prepare to ride Aristia ($4.60) in today’s $1 million Kennedy Oaks (2500m) at Flemington, one of the biggest races of the carnival.

This comes less than a week after he rode the three-year-old filly to victory in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day.

Lane will also team up with Darren Weir and James Cummings for rides in the $150,000 Listed Absolut Stakes (1000m) and $150,000 TCL TV Stakes (1800m) respectively.
