A second red light camera has been installed in the Bunbury area, but has not yet started catching law-breaking road users.

The Road Safety Commission has confirmed the new device is yet to go live at the Bussell Highway and Norton Promenade intersection.

The camera poles have been erected, but are not yet connected to electricity.

Acting Road Safety Commissioner Iain Cameron said the spot was chosen because of its crash history.

“This intersection was identified as a high-risk crash site based on crash data analysis,” Mr Cameron said.

He said the aim of the cameras was to make the intersection “as safe as possible” and the two ways to do that were to deter drivers from speeding and running red lights.

“When we place red light speed cameras at high-risk intersections we see a dramatic improvement in terms of the number of crashes going down and driver behaviour from a speed point of view,” he said.

“Most drivers do the right thing, however enforcement – including automated enforcement – is a reminder to everyone to do the right thing to keep people safe at intersections.”

The cameras will photograph road users who run a red light and will also detect speeders.

The first red light camera in Bunbury was installed at the Blair Street and Sandridge Road traffic lights last year.

It also comes as the point-to-point speed cameras on Forrest Highway went live last month after a six-month trial.

Mr Cameron said there were no plans for further red light speed cameras in the South West.

The devices are part of a raft of new fixed and red light speed cameras in the State Government’s push to crack down on law-breaking road users.

A date has not yet been set for when the cameras will go live.
